Empty Nests, 2018

Brass, Moss, Resin, Steel, Paint, Wood panel

I titled this piece Empty Nests because in my search for creativity one day, I found myself creating these ‘nest-like’ sculptures, repeating again and again until I was out of material. I felt a need to create a 3-Dimensional painting that was about the process of aging. The surrounding ‘nests’ are also egg-shaped, and symbolize the loss of fertility, the large nest in the center is not empty however, it holds a cluster of moss that I grew, nurtured, and preserved in resin to symbolize the preservation of life. The white hoop cuts through the nest allowing it to either be viewed as half-full or half-empty, and when viewed under the moving sun, casts an evolving shadow onto the piece that brings it to life.
